A while ago, someone asked me what I thought about "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd. I'd always enjoyed the track but never put tons of thought into it. Ever since then I've been considering what it's all about, and why it gets inside your skull.
"Wish You Were Here" works well because of the juxtaposed imagery.
The listener is drawn in by questions that are both direct and rhetorical at once. Simple lyrics mull over objects that don't appear to be opposites on the same spectrum, yet relate well. The deliberative choice of words results in connected ideas yet a disconnected tone.
